In Alabama, like in many states across the United States, there is a significant achievement gap in education. This gap is particularly pronounced when it comes to race, with Black and Hispanic students lagging behind their white peers in academic performance and graduation rates. One of the main factors driving this achievement gap is the unequal distribution of resources between schools in different neighborhoods. Fairfield Clergy Luncheon

2023-04-24T12:40:00-05:00

Christa Andrews with Black Alabamians for Education held a Clergy luncheon in Fairfield, AL discussing a potential charter school in the area. Christa gave the pastors information about the Charter School Law in Alabama. The pastors were in agreement that many children need something different to get them off the current trajectory of crime and that parents need more information to help advocate for their children.  The pastors were able to ask her questions and get direct answers. The pastors overwhelmingly felt that the session was informative and that their knowledge of charter schools was increased.

What Does School Choice Mean?

2020-09-09T16:32:56-05:00

Traditionally, children are assigned to a public school according to where they live. People of greater economic means already have school choice, because they can afford to move to an area with high quality public schools, or to enroll their children in private schools. Parents without such means, until recently, generally had no school choices, and had to send their children to the schools assigned to them by the district, regardless of the schools’ quality or appropriateness for [...]
